Is it Still Good?
Spring Cleaning: Deciding What to Keep
As spring cleaning rolls around, it’s time to declutter and refresh your home. Many people struggle with knowing how long to hang on to certain items. Below is a guide to help you determine when it’s time to let go of common household products.
Batteries
Different types of batteries have varying lifespans. Zinc - carbon batteries last about one year, alkaline batteries remain good for three to four years, lithium batteries can last up to five years, and mercury batteries generally last two and a half years. Regardless of age, if you notice the batteries are crusty or leaking, it’s best to dispose of them immediately.
Medicine
The expiration date is printed directly on each container, making it easy to determine if your medicines are still safe to use. Your medicine cabinet essentially provides a snapshot of your medical history, so discard anything past its expiration date.
Vitamins
Vitamins are typically good for two years. Taking extra doses to try and extend their usefulness won’t help: it’s best to follow the expiration dates.
Spices
While common spices can last two to five years, all spices lose flavor over time, so it’s wise to replace them regularly for the best taste.
Cologne and Perfume
These products are good for about two years. After that, you may notice the scent changes and no longer matches the original fragrance.
Cosmetics
Most cosmetics such as mascara and lipstick , last two years,, After that time it is best to replace them.
Canned Goods
Canned goods generally remain safe to eat for twelve to eighteen months, depending on the type. Meat and vegetables tend to keep better than fruit during storage.
Paint
Water - based paint lasts up to two years, while oil-based paint may last three years if it is tightly sealed. If the contaaainer was not properly sealed, the paint is likely no longer uasble.
This is a short list of products, my book. “ Are You a Junkaholic? “ provides you with a complete list and where to dispose of the items. It is available on Amazon.
